Access to extensive vocational rehabilitation made a big difference in enabling Betty to be employed as a dental hygienist. But “old learning” had greatly assisted her in finishing her studies. Her difficulty with “new learning” made long-term employment in this career difficult because of the huge changes that occurred in the dental industry over the last generation.  Further, a job is far harder to manage than the structured environment of the classroom.  All TBI rehab must find ways to not just teach the cognitive skills, but the behavior challenges of the real world.
