Insurance

The topic of insurance is one that is far broader than anyone web page could hope to address. So our hope in adding this page is to give you a brief overview of things to keep in mind when making the decisions as to what and how much insurance you should purchase. We also want to get you started towards finding more information on the web with respect to insurance.

There are hundreds of different kinds of insurance, but the ones we feel are important enough to discuss are Automotive, Homeowners, Health, Life Insurance and Umbrella insurances. Everyone should have the first three, the fourth is worth considering and the fifth is inexpensive protection for anyone with a significant net worth.

Insurance is gambling against your good fortune. What you do when you buy insurance is essentially hedge your bet that things will go well for you, so that if things go badly, you will have a less severe financial impact from your bad fortune. Insurance companies, because they insure the bad fortune of so many people, should be able to pay your losses.

When sold and administered properly, insurance and insurance companies are a good thing. Insurance companies become a problem when they try to change the odds on the bet they made, after they have already lost. Understand that this page is written by a personal injury attorney, Gordon S. Johnson, Jr., who essentially does nothing but bang heads with insurance companies as to how much they should pay on claims. But in this writer's opinion, insurance companies are almost always looking for ways to pay less than their fair share.

How much to pay on a substantial claim gets to be a high stakes poker game. The insurance companies professional gambler, the adjuster, uses all of his or her skills to bluff the claimant out of fair compensation. The system works okay if the claimant also has a professional gambler, an attorney to counter this tactic. But if the claimant walks into this poorly lit room without such a champion by his side, he will risk being the greenhorn whose rights will be lost, as surely as the greenhorns money will disappear.

When insurance adjusters are forthright and fair, lawyers aren't needed. But don't walk into this situation expecting such behavior. The vast majority of insurance professionals, despite the advertising about the good hands people or friendly this, or friendly that, will see your compensation as a game, and take advantage of you whenever they think they can. If you sign a check or release on a substantial claim before you have discussed this matter with an attorney, you do so at your own risk.

Fortunately, in most states there is a state agency that monitors improper behavior by insurance companies.

Understanding Subtle Brain Injury

The concussions that disable, are almost always more symptomatic at 24 hours, than at the 2-4 hour time frame when injured persons are evaluated in the emergency room. Brain injury symptoms escalate over the first 24 hours, because brain injury involves a cascade of events. It is critical that if you are still symptomatic the day after your injury, go back to the same Emergency Room, don’t wait for a doctors appointment. It is critical that the Emergency Room personnel see that the symptoms still persist or have gotten worse.
