Elizabeth Part Six – Memory and Cognitive Challenges

Elizabeth discusses her challenges related to memory and understanding. Listening is much harder than talking since it requires keeping focused and trying to understand what is being said. Often, something has to be said multiple times for her to finally understand it. Remembering something hours later or what happened the day before is hard for Elizabeth, unless she writes it down. She can not produce something quickly because it takes her more time to think and understand.

Elizabeth’s problems are not apparent during this interview. This is often the case, especially when the individual is doing the talking. Many people with brain injuries feel most comfortable and remember best when they are doing the talking. Things that are important or have an emotional component are also easier to remember.
