ENG for Balance and Vertigo Problems After Brain Injury

ENG

ENG stands fora  Electronystagmogram. The ENG  is used to diagnose pathology with respect to the balance system, the cranial nerves and the brain stem.During ENG, electrodes are attached to the face near the eyes to record eye movements. The movements are recorded on graph paper. A series of recordings is done. They take recordings while your head is at rest. they also take recordings while you move your head up and down in addition to recordings taken as you watch a moving object.  Sometimes they will place cold water or air inside your ear and take a recording.

An ENG is done to find out if the problem is in the inner ear, brain or in the nerves connecting to them that are causing a balance or dizziness problem.  It may also determine whether there is damage to the structures or nerves of the inner ear, brain or nerves connecting them together.

This test will usually be done in a hospital although some ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) doctors may perform the test in their office if they have the right equipment. The test may also be performed by an audiologist, a hearing doctor.  The test is normally pain free and takes between 60-90 minutes.  Like most medical procedures they may ask you not to eat more than a light meal before.  They will check your ears for ear wax before performing the procedure.  If there is any it will be removed.  The patient is also asked not to wear make-up as this could interfere with the results as the electrodes will be attached directly to your face.

It can sometimes be the best test for identifying abnormalities for someone with a brain injury. For more information on the ENG, click here.

The ENG should be administered by a specialist such as neuro-otologist or otolaryngologist.
