Elizabeth Part Five – Balance Difficulties After TBI

Elizabeth is a prime example of the cumulative effects of additional head trauma, even injuries classified as “mild TBIs”. Even conservative medical professionals in the field of neuropsychiatry acknowledge a prolonged recovery and lasting deficits which can result from a second or subsequent injuries. Balance difficulties are one of the major factors which contribute to later injuries. Elizabeth discusses problems she has with dizziness—i.e., situations which induce dizziness or require more vigilance and care to prevent falls—and the therapy she received to deal with her balance problems. From her lack of familiarity with terms such as vestibular, benign positional vertigo, BPV and BPPV, one can presume that she probably did not receive complete testing for dizziness, balance and vertigo. This type of testing is done by an otoneurologist or neurotologist.
